The bombardier sat in the forward center of the nose of the airplane. During the bomb run the bombardier had command of the airplane and took control through an autopilot connected to the Norton Bombsight. When not on the bomb run he was responsible for manning the twin .50-caliber machine gun chin turret.
The navigator was positioned in the left-hand side of the nose of the airplane, behind the bombardier. He would track the location of the aircraft through various means such as pilotage, dead reckoning, radio navigation, or celestial navigation. He was also responsible for firing the cheek-mounted .50-caliber machine guns on each side of the nose.
