At the foot end of the captain's bunk you can see the depth gauge and gyro-compass repeater he could use to monitor the boat's status. It was normal for the captain to be notified every time aircraft or another vessel was spotted, or the ships course, speed, or depth was changed. Although he had the only private stateroom on the boat, he did not get very much sleep.
