The Chief Petty Officer (CPO) mess is where the Hornet's CPO's (senior enlisted men) ate their meals. Adjacent to this space is the CPO lounge where the rudder centering device is located. This device was used to center the rudder and lock it into position if the steering mechanism was out of order.
