On this ship, we have been told by former crewmen that the engineer stood his watch in the Radio room and monitored the equipment in the engine room by taking hourly readings. The room contains a URC-7 SSB/AM ship to shore radio and work desk. The big black units are very low frequency radio beacon transmitters (320 kHz, below KFRC 610 kHz.) The gray central control panel synchronized their signals with the time tick WWV in Colorado so that the lightship’s signal would not interfere with other nearby radio beacon transmissions. Radio direction finders could take bearings, but some ships preferred to “home in” on the beacon. The gray panel on the bulkhead to the left of the entry door controls the main light. The file cabinet contains some of the original ship’s blueprints which are still used for reference today.
