NS Savannah - Fin Stabilizer Equipment

On either side of Savannah amidships there are fin stabilizers. After leaving port, they were rigged out with the large hydraulic ram. They then worked like the control surfaces on an airplane automatically turning as needed to prevent the ship from rolling. In addition to providing a more comfortable ride for passengers, these fins enhanced the ship's stability, and thus the safety of the nuclear reactor. Savannah was the sixth vessel to feature this system.
