LV 605 - Steering Gear Room

The original steering system had the steering cables connected to the rudder quadrant and a small set of hydraulic rams to assist in moving the rudder. The cable system was converted to full hydraulic in 1980, after the ship was decommissioned. Note the cables lying on the bulkhead. These connect to the ships wheel in the pilothouse and were formerly connected to the quadrant. The compartment also contains the rudder stock, hydraulic pumps and spare parts. A set of sound powered phones to the left of the door allows for emergency steering from this space.
